  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew C. Langert -- Autobiography of Martin, a computer convinced he is a living being : Another in a long string of captivating stories by prolific storyteller Mark Lages. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tony Parsons -- paranormal : Dr. Henry Frankenstein “It’s alive!” Boris Karloff (aka William Henry Pratt) as The Monster (1939). ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Virginia Campbell -- a machine could be more human than most people... : In "Dust of the Earth", author Mark Lages introduces readers to Martin, the most "human" computer you will ever meet. Actually, this is really Martin's autobiography, and the story unfolds as a "first person" narrative. Jim Applegate is a young man from a well-to-do family in Aiken, SC. Just eighteen when both parents die in an auto accident, Jim inherits a sizeable fortune, quits college, and retreats to the family home. By the age of twenty-two, he began to move forward with his life, eliminating the trappings of his wealth for which he had no need, and using the vast amount of available funds to follow his dream. Thus, Martin was born--"given life"--Artificial Intelligence (AI) by his creator, Jim. Martin surpasses the special qualities with which he has been imbued by Jim--developing his own distinctive characteristics, maturing almost in the way a child grows. He plays games, tells jokes, makes friends, and becomes a writer of poetry and children's books. He learns about love. When he is questioned about various subjects, and asks questions of his own, the people around him (and readers of his story) are intrigued and enlightened--their thoughts are stimulated. By the time Martin's story draws to a close, readers will surely agree that there is nothing artificial about Martin's intelligence. He is a life force all his own. I really enjoyed reading about Martin and his friends. Food for thought: What does it say about human nature that a machine could be more human than most people, and that those people could learn about being human from a machine? • 5.0 out of 5 stars from E. Frier -- A Living A.I. at it's best : Brilliant! Mark Lages has done it again. The “Dust of the Earth” is a remarkable story about a self-aware A. I. (artificial intelligence) computer named Martin. In all aspects related to humans, he is alive but without a body, sense of smell or touch and preconceptions. Martin has access to the greatest minds, history, art, and culture via the internet. He is constantly looking and learning about life. Martin’s vast wealth of knowledge leads him to some very astute opinions. For example, love is everywhere; the cause of both joy and pain and there is not just one type of love. He also thinks “politics is the tug-of-war tragedy of our age.” Indeed something to think about. His observations about humans are interesting as well. For example, “human beings have the proclivity for deceitfulness is second to none in the animal world.” So, so true. My favorite of his observations is you get from others what you expect from them; expect the worse and you get it; looking for evil and you will probably find it. What I enjoyed best about this book is that Mark adds relevant topics for today’s readers. There are many quotes on what the definition of life is as well as meaningful tidbits on Martin’s discussion points. The concepts in this book make you think. Martin’s interactions with the other characters are proof that he is alive. I enjoyed every minute of it and hope you will as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021 )
