• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Becky W. -- A must for practitioners of gifted youth : This book doesn't add a lot that is new, but clearly states that there is very little research to draw from. To his credit, Cross doesn't publish "from the gut" but rather from evidence. Perhaps one of the greatest offerings from this book is exposing the need for more research, especially since what people think about suicide among the gifted may not be borne out by what is actually known about suicide among gifted youth. By necessity, it is more like there are two parallel threads - youth suicide and gifted youth. Occasionally they overlap to some degree. Cross's earlier psychological autopsies form the basis of much of what is reported that is specific to gifted youth and suicide and I would encourage readers to find and read those for a deeper look into a few concrete examples. Cross has devoted much of his life to studying and reporting on suicide in gifted youth and for that, we should be thankful. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2015 )

The teachers and administrators that perpetuate the falsehoods of overachievement and indoctrination, lead kids to a state of mind that they may never recover from. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from staples -- Short, repetitive, uninsightful : This book it is just over a hundred pages, and is highly repetitive - - so much so for example that table 11 and 12 are exactly the same. It is geared for school professionals comma the mostly seems to just review literature on the topic, without offering much in the way of new insight. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sumi's Books -- Great concepts but too short : I'm giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 for the simple fact that I wish it were a bit longer and the concepts and ideas/suggestions were more expanded upon. This book has some amazing points and makes them clearly. However considering the short length of the book, I felt as though I was reading an information pamphlet instead of an actual text on the subject. I personally agree with nearly ALL the points brought up in this book especially in Chapter 8 when it is discussed that the true first line of high school suicide prevention lies within their fellow students. "Students often know before the adults do." 100% true! I love the suggestions given of how to reshape our high schools curriculums to not only teach suicide awareness to students, but also to better tailor said curriculums to be better suited and even more challenging for our gifted students who are at a different level than the majority. One other point this book makes that REALLY stood out to me was changing the stigma of intelligent, gifted children. Instead of putting them down, shunning them or just simply placing them with all the rest out of lack of knowing what to do for them, we should instead be encouraging them and even challenging them to do their very best at each grade level.
